Signs Your Firewall Needs Replacing
A firewall can keep blinking happily long after it has stopped protecting you well. These are the signs it is time to plan a replacement.
The manufacturer has announced end of support
Every model has an end-of-life date, after which it gets no firmware updates or security fixes. Firewalls face the internet directly, so running one past that date is a real risk. Manufacturers publish these dates; we can check yours from the model name.
Your internet line has outgrown it
If you have moved from 100 Mbps to 500 Mbps or 1 Gbps, an older firewall may not inspect traffic that fast. The symptom is internet that feels slower than the line you pay for, especially with protection switched on.
Protection is switched off to keep things fast
If intrusion prevention or web filtering was turned off because it slowed the office down, the firewall is undersized. You are paying for protection you are not getting.
The renewal costs nearly as much as a new unit
Licence prices often rise as a model ages. When a multi-year renewal approaches the cost of a current model with a new bundle, replacing is usually the better deal.
Other signs
- You need features it lacks, such as SD-WAN, more VPN users or faster ports
- Hardware faults: fans failing, random restarts, ports dropping
- Nobody knows the admin password or why the rules are there
Common questions
How long should a business firewall last?
Five to seven years is typical. The end of manufacturer support or a much faster internet line usually ends its life before the hardware fails.
Will replacing the firewall cause downtime?
With a planned migration, only a short switchover, scheduled outside working hours. The old unit is kept ready as a fallback.
Can we change brand when we replace it?
Yes. The rules and VPNs are rebuilt on the new platform. It is also a good moment to remove rules nobody uses.
